M ichael sat on the bridge of the merchant ship Avalon . The last day had not been going well for them. They’d traveled on the more heavily traveled hyperspace ways hoping to get past the pirates that had become such a problem of late, and at first it appeared to be working. He was depending on the ability of his ship’s best-in-class scanners to give him enough warning to avoid any pirates in the area.

Somehow, it had gone horribly wrong. Even with Avalon’s powerful sensors, the pirates had ensnared them in a trap. They should have been able to see the pirates in time to avoid them. It was almost like they knew where to look for them, which meant they had to have had a leak on the planet where they picked up the artifact.

“I’m getting too old for this kind of thing,” Michael told his First Mate and friend Jack. “Do you see any way to escape? Any chance of ducking into a nebula or something?”

Jack shook his head. “No, our ‘friends’ out there chose their ambush well. There is nowhere for us to go. I’m beginning more and more to smell a rat.”

Michael nodded. “Me too, not that it matters. Keep squawking our SOS. There’s nothing else we can do but hope someone hears and gets here in time to help.”

“What are the chances of that?” Jack asked, although he already knew the answer. Very slim.

“Even though this area is a little more heavily traveled for the Rim, it’s still the Rim. So not likely,” Michael told his friend.

“What about our cargo?” Jack asked.

“We will have no choice but to destroy it, along with the ship, if it comes to that. We dare not allow it to fall into the wrong hands.”

“This is usually the place where your daughter or her family comes along to rescue us,” Jack told him. “I think that’s our only hope.”

Michael shook his head. “I expect they’re all safe on New Earth right now, not that I would turn down their help.”

He couldn’t resist adding, “We’ll take whatever we can get!”
